One small study, in two steps

You pick one question and answer it with a method we already used in class. The midterm is your written plan. The final is the finished project and a short talk in the last class. You are your own participant unless you arrange otherwise with the instructor.

Fill in week10-project/CHECKIN.md (already in your private course repository), push it, and paste on Canvas. Due Wednesday 28 October, 21:00. Written only; no talk.

Your finished project and talk

A working page, the filled week10-project/FINAL.md, and a 3-minute talk in class. Due Wednesday 2 December, 21:00, the last class. This is a project, not a written exam.

Timeline

From plan to presentation

Wed 28 October · Week 8: Hand in the plan during class. The instructor reads it and helps you narrow it to one question.
Wed 4 November · Week 9: Last weekly lab.
9–13 November · Reading Week: Start building your page. Use your own data only.

Wed 18 November · Week 10: Work session: turn the plan into a page that opens. Bring your plan and at least one CSV.
Wed 25 November · Week 11: Work session: finish the result and the limitation. Come with a page that already opens.
Wed 2 December · Week 12: Push everything, then everyone gives a 3-minute talk (18:15–20:45).

What you may use

Any method from class: simple or choice reaction time, the questionnaire (inventory), a comparison of two conditions, a written methods-and-results page built from files you already have, or a browser game that tests a question (the Week 9 game.html path). A game still needs a one-sentence question, a comparison it records, and a CSV or a result shown on the page.

What you do not need

A partner, classmates’ data, a new code library, or any statistics beyond averages and spreads you can explain. If you want to collect data from classmates, ask the instructor first; the data stay in the room.

Score breakdown

4 points · Question: One sentence saying what you will measure or show. Someone else could repeat it back to you.
3 points · Method: Which method from class you will use (see “What you may use” above).
4 points · Prediction: What you expect to find, written before you collect new data. The hand-in date is your timestamp.

2 points · Starting files: The files already in your repository that you will reuse (a CSV, an earlier report, a draft page).
2 points · Plan and risk: What you will have built by 2 December, and one thing that could go wrong.
Required, not scored · AI note: What you asked an AI tool, what you kept, and what you changed, or no Copilot tonight.

If you miss class on 28 October for a reason the instructor accepts, hand the plan in by Friday 30 October, 17:00.

Final · 35 points = 35% of the course

Part A · Project page and `FINAL.md` · 30 points (30%)

7 points · Working page: A web page (HTML), or a Markdown methods-and-results file with a figure. Someone who is not you can open it and say what you measured.
6 points · Prediction: The prediction from your midterm plan. If your question changed, say so and give the new prediction.
7 points · Result: One figure or table made from your data, and one sentence stating what you found.

5 points · Limitation: One honest limit, including what your amount of data (n) can and cannot show.
3 points · Data file: A CSV in week10-project/ if you collected new data, or the line no new data if you reused an earlier file.
2 points · AI note: What you asked, kept, and changed, or no Copilot tonight.

Part B · In-class presentation · 5 points (5%)

On Wednesday 2 December, open your page in front of the class and walk through it in 3 minutes: your question, your prediction, your result, and your limitation. No slides needed; the page is what you show. Everyone presents. A classmate should be able to repeat your question and your result afterwards.

If you miss the presentation for a reason the instructor accepts, present by Friday 4 December, 17:00. If you hand in neither the page nor the talk, the Faculty process for a missed final assessment applies.

Not marked: how fancy the page looks, extra features, or statistics you cannot explain.

Rules that apply to the midterm and the final

Individual work. A file that exists only on your laptop is not handed in; push it and paste on Canvas. Do not include classmates’ names or their raw data. Late work and letter grades follow the Simple Syllabus on Canvas. A more detailed marking guide for each part will be added to this page later.
